Countdown To Copenhagen

In December, the UN will be holding climate change talks in Copenhagen, Denmark. These are the most important climate talks in history, where ministers will negotiate the successor to the Kyoto Protocol. Climate change scientists believe, to halt a rise in the planet’s temperature by more than 2°C, we will need to cut our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.

The JCC is doing its bit to mark the importance of this historic event, and we ask you to join us. Between now and December 7th you can learn more about climate change and get involved in making a difference in a variety of ways.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

October
1. Stand up and take action: The great Persuasion

October 17th is International Day for the Eradication of World Poverty. All over the UK, people will be taking part in a mass lobby of constituency MPs and Prospective Parliamentary Candidates. The idea is that members of the public arrange meetings with them, to ask what they and their parties intend to do to halt the onset of climate change. The organisers are aiming to set the world record for the biggest mass lobby ever - similar events will be taking place all over the world.

If you would like to take part in a personal capacity, or would like to get your community involved, we can help. As October 17th is a Saturday, we will ensure the Jewish community can take part in the weeks before and after.

Email hannah@jcclondon.org.uk for more information.

November
2. An evening with Ed Miliband

On November 11th join the Jewish Social Action Forum for a screening of The Age of Stupid, followed by a Q & A with Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband. This will be your opportunity to ask the Minister for Energy and Climate Change what he intends to do at Copenhagen. More details can be found here.

3. Mitzvah Day

On November 15th the JCC will be taking part in ‘One Million Feet to Copenhagen’. Children of all ages are invited to paint their feet and take a photo to be sent to Copenhagen. Click here for more information.

December
4. Stop Climate Chaos: The Wave

December 5th is just two days before the climate change talks in Copenhagen begin. The ‘Wave’ is set to be the largest public mobilisation on environmental issues that the UK has ever witnessed. The aim is to ensure the British government knows the public want a lasting and effective deal to be signed in Copenhagen.

As December 5th is a Saturday, several different communities are arranging Shabbat services close to the start of the event, scheduled to take place around Westminster.
