JCC - Lit Café

Arab-Israeli Book Club

The Arab-Israeli conflict is an issue about which everyone has an opinion, and so we rarely step back and listen deeply to different voices within the debate.

This discussion of Arabesques by Anton Shammas, the first Arab novel written in Hebrew, opens a unique window on Israeli Arab identity. It will expand your understanding of what it means to be both Arab and Israeli, and of what happens when the two supposed opposites intermingle.

Join writer and lecturer Ariel Kahn, together with the celebrated Palestinian novelist Samir El-Yussuf, as we explore the many layers and meanings of this warm, witty, fascinating novel, which John Updike described as “intricately conceived and beautifully written.”

We hope this will be the first in a series, each event exploring a different author. Reading the novel in advance will certainly enhance your experience, but is not required.

Kitzer Kibbitzer

Following the sell-out success of the Pecha Kucha nights on ‘Home’ and‘Change’, the concept returns with a third night of super-fast presentations now with our very own name – Kitzer Kibbitzer (which means “Word Gossip” in Yiddish).

We’ve asked a varied array of artists, performers, doctors, social workers and mothers and fathers to answer one question - what does ‘family’ mean to you? Each presenter brings 20 images. Each image is shown for 20 seconds, amounting to 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. They can talk, they can sing,
they can rant, but they cannot exceed their time-slot. And at least some of them are Jews. Imagine the self-discipline.

Please join us for this fantastically exciting, varied and passionate evening – you’ll want to take part yourself the next time it happens.

Please note the venue has changed.
