2006. Whitechapel Library is about to closedown. A unique place of learning; a sanctuary for the many impoverished aspiring East-enders, the library was known as “The University of the Ghetto”. Here Rosenberg, Bomberg, Gertler, Wesker, Kops and Professor Bronowski sought sanctuary, warmth and educated themselves.
Librarian Leo Silver is about to retire. For him a whole world is about to be demolished. But on his last few days Aleya, a Muslim girl, running away from home seeks the library cellar for a hiding place. Their lives touch.
